Leonard James, Age 21

Private, 203246, 1/5th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment.

Leonard was the eldest son of Mr & Mrs James who lived at Chapel Street, Dawley. Two of Leonard’s brothers also served Sapper Reggie James and Private Donald James, both survived the war. He had served an apprenticeship at Phillip's grocers in the High Street but at the time of his enlistment was working as a storekeeper at Stafford Asylum.

Leonard was reported as wounded and missing in April 1917, but it was later learnt that he had been taken prisoner and died of his wounds on March 17th 1917.

On Leonard’s war pension Alice Tranter was claiming for a child, Alice was the same age as Leonard and in the 1911 census was living at 17 Sandy Bank Row, Doseley, and Leonard at 28, Chapel St, Dawley, the child I think was Phyllis Joan Tranter born in the May of 1916, the address for Alice on the war pension was 21 Pool Hill, Dawley.
